Pirate Dance

The Pirate Dance has been a popular event over the years in Original Carrollwood dating back to 1963. Decked out in costumes, neighbors gathered to enjoy the festivities, and a Duke and a Duchess were named.

The first dance was held on Saturday night, Feb. 16th, 1963 at the Florida Confederate Hall on Waters Avenue (now gone). Invitations urged “pirate costume for the adventuresome” and “informal for sissies”! Tickets were sold for $1.50 each, with live music by Tommy Ferraro Band and complimentary beer. Table snacks and set-ups were BYOB. In March, The Caroler reported that “the place was decorated to its swashbuckling hilt with colored flags, a pink and gold pirate chest spilling out with historical loot and candles burning in old wine bottles. A colorful gangplank was the entrance route. Costumes and makeup were enough to scare the livin’ daylights out of you!” An enormous and enthusiastic social committee included the following: Dotty & Dick Block, Abe & Anetta Rigau, Goeroge & Charmaine Kerr, Hector & Irma Carravacci, Jim & Burchard, Al & Lorraine Conolly, John & Jane Richmond, Lee & Meg Belanger, Bob & Dot Banker, and Bud & Norma Felsenthal.

Lake Carroll

Lake Carroll is a man-made recreational lake located in Carroll County, Illinois. It was formed in 1974 by the damming of the east fork of the Plum River near the town of Lanark, Illinois. The earthen dam is owned and operated by the Lake Carroll Association. It is the largest private lake in the state of Illinois.

You can find Fish Species like Largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, walleye, blue & channel catfish at Carroll Lake.

Fishing

Lake Carroll has a wide range of Illinois species: sunfish (bluegill, redear, pumpkinseed), yellow perch, black and white crappie, walleye, bass (smallmouth, largemouth, & white), muskie, northern pike, catfish (channel and flathead), and carp. Lake Carroll maintains its own fish hatchery for walleyes and restocks the lake each fall.

Currently, there are private bass tournaments held spring through fall. Weight limits are for a 5-fish creel, and tournament weights are consistently over 18 pounds, with winning weights commonly over 20 pounds. To help grow the fishery, all smallmouth and largemouth bass are catch-and-release.

Spillway

The spillway is designed with an ogee crest to allow controlled discharge of surplus water from the watershed. The lake is also designed with an emergency spillway that would discharge excess flood water away from the toe of the dam to ensure a safe operation in flooding conditions.

The local fishing club provides an annual fish rescue for gamefish that have escaped the lake flowing over the spillway throughout the year. The rescue is performed below the dam in the stilling basin before entering the creek below.

Water activities

In addition to fishing, normal lake activities are available, such as swimming, boating, water skiing, wave running, jet skiing, kayaking, and canoeing
